Our New Associate Editor:  Dr Shalmalee Palekar

Westerly is delighted to announce the appointment of Dr Shalmalee Palekar as Associate Editor.

Shalmalee will commence her work as Associate Editor with Issue 69.1 of Westerly (due June/July this year), working alongside General Editor Dr Daniel Juckes and the Westerly team. We welcome the wealth of knowledge and experience that Shalmalee brings to the Magazine!

Shalmalee is an academic in English and Literary Studies at The University of Western Australia. She has previously taught at renowned Indian and Australian Universities, and has won national awards for excellence in teaching. She writes on South Asian literatures and Indian cinemas and is also a published poet. Shalmalee has co-written original scripts and performed shows nationally and internationally with three women and a cello, collectively called Funkier than Alice.

On Shalmalee’s appointment, Daniel notes: ‘It’s really exciting to be able to welcome Shalmalee to the team. She is a formidable thinker, with expertise in postcolonial literatures, as well as a kind and insightful reader. I can’t wait to work with her!’

We are proud to be announcing this exciting next chapter for Westerly in 2024 and we welcome Shalmalee to her new role with much anticipation. We thank Dr Catherine Noske for her dedication and invaluable contributions to Westerly over the last eight years in her roles as General and Associate Editor. Catherine will continue to work with the Magazine, offering advice as Editorial Consultant, and in the newly created role of Scholarly Editor.
