It was pretty traumatic, and if I ever needed my mother, I needed her then.
Carroll and her husband had thought coming over to Australia would be easy—when they arrived however, the reality of their experience came as a bit of a shock.
Before they were even settled, a child came along, and at a time when married women were still barred from work. When she separated from her husband, Carroll found herself raising their daughters alone.
