Writers’ Development Program and Mid-Career Fellowship 2020-21

In partnership with Katherine Susannah Prichard Writers’ Centre and with the support of The Copyright Agency’s Cultural Fund, Westerly Magazine is excited to announce the fifth year of our Writers’ Development Program, and our first ever Mid-Career Fellowship!

Applications for both of these programs are open now, and will remain open until midnight on the 30th of October. Follow our social media and watch this space to stay up to date!

The Westerly Writers’ Development Program began in 2016, supporting five Western Australian writers with mentoring and publishing opportunities, with their work being published in Westerly 62.1. Every year we have been delighted and impressed by the standard of work produced through this program, and we hope that the education and opportunities we provide will help these emerging writers launch their careers in the literary world.

This year, the Writers’ Development Program is offering three emerging Western Australian writers a $500 bursary, mentoring with a respected WA writer/editor to produce new work for publication in the Westerly, and a three-day writing retreat at KSP Writers’ Centre in Greenmount. Over the course of the mentorship, the emerging writers will make invaluable connections with other writers and industry professionals to help with ongoing support and professional development.

Westerly has always been committed to supporting Western Australian writers throughout their careers, so we are absolutely delighted to announce that this year, in addition to the Writers’ Development Program, we are offering a $2000 Fellowship to two mid-career Western Australian writers who have already published at least one and no more than four full-length works or collections. This Fellowship will see the writers produce original, high-quality works of prose or poetry to be published in Westerly, both in print and online. The two successful writers will be featured in Westerly 66.1 and Westerly 66.2 respectively.

We can’t wait to start working with this new round of talented emerging authors, and we are thrilled to be able to extend our support to mid-career writers in our thriving WA writing community. Go here for more on how to apply for this fantastic opportunity.

Hi there, I was wondering if you had any scholarships or competitions going for emerging poets? As I write over a diverse range of subjects and I am keen to show my writing to the world to entertain and bring a real , honest & thoughtful perspective to the written word. I also create the calligraphic artwork in words that accompany this craft.
    Thank you, website is coming.
    Most fondest regards Judith Ann

    Hi Judith Ann,

The only opportunity we have open at the moment for emerging poets is the Writers’ Development Program. The program offers mentorship and a pathway to publication, alongside a small bursary and a writers residency. You can find more information on that here: https://westerlymag.com.au/writers-development-program-and-mid-career-fellowship/

Otherwise, we don’t generally run competitions. Our submissions for publication will open again in February.

    All best,
    Catherine
